Ruth Strand Poster Contest

Winners of 2018 Ruth Strand Poster Contest Announced

Children have a unique perspective on history, and their thoughtful, colorful—and often humorous—takes on the subject were well-documented in the 350 entries received for the 2018 Ruth Strand Poster Contest. The annual Ruth Strand Poster Contest, sponsored by the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation and the Elmhurst History Museum, challenged second grade students to depict a scene from Elmhurst history. The contest honors Ruth Strand, the long-time director of the Elmhurst Public Library and a founding member of what is now the Elmhurst History Museum.

Students from 10 Elmhurst schools participated this year, and members of the community voted to select the winners. The first place poster, created by Daniella Miulli of Hawthorne Elementary School, was a beautiful rendering of the Wilder Mansion, which she noted as the home of early Elmhurst resident Seth Wadhams that was originally called “White Birch.”

Following are the top winners of the 2018 Ruth Strand Poster Contest:

1st Place – Daniella Miulli, Hawthorne School

2nd Place – Gabby Cantrell, Immaculate Conception

3rd Place – Gavin Stutts, Field School (tie)

3rd Place – Lucy Beal, Hawthorne (tie)

Honorable MentionsAviana Heckenbach, Fischer; Clare O’Shaughnessy, Visitation; Hanna George, Lincoln; John Teevens, Emerson; Julia Cizek, Jackson; Katie Knable, Immaculate Conception; Olivia Auvil, Edison; Renata Torres, Field; Samantha Drolett, Jefferson; and Sophie Hummel, Hawthorne.

The poster contest winners will be honored on May 23 at a reception at the Elmhurst History Museum. Students will receive gift bags from the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation, and schools with ten or more participants receive a $100 grant to support their school’s library. The winning entries may be viewed at City Hall after June 5. In addition, the winners will march alongside the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation in the Elmhurst Memorial Day parade on May 28 and also be recognized at the Elmhurst City Council meeting on June 4.

The Elmhurst Heritage Foundation congratulates and thanks all of the 2018 Ruth Strand Poster Contest participants and their teachers for sharing their beautiful posters on Elmhurst history with the community.
